OPENBi - Biblioteche Interattive aims to expand, leveraging the application of ICT tools, the treasures of knowledge saved in local public libraries, with the one kept in private libraries, putting it on line , setting up a network, thus creating a platform of open and shared knowledge that can also become a real and concrete driving force, able to enhance not only the cultural, but also the economic development of our region.
The system, developed by the project OPENBi, is the real answer to the need for a model ofinventorying, cataloging, data acquisition, recording and subsequent digitization of selected library materials, which could be efficient not only locally, but could be also exportable
The experts in library and archival sciences of the project OpenBI have selected six private libraries, particularly important for the value and exclusivity of their Library and archival collections".
The private libraries, core of the researches of project OPENBi, are the following:

OPENBI/DLMS Digital Library Management System (Informatica e Tecnologia s.r.l. - I&T Group)
OPENBi/DLMS is the system that allows to create and manage a Digital Library portal and the whole life cycle of a, already born digital, resource, or later transformed into digital format, through a process of digitization: from the entry or ingestion in the 'infrastructure, to metadating, cataloging and dissemination (browsing, search, visualization) processes.
The system allows the indexing of assets to feed the research process from the user. Eventual derived digital objects, suitable for the planned dissemination tools (images at lower resolutions, pdf. files associated with books, etc.) are created to suit the kind of digital resource. Finally, in the enrichment stage, the digital resources are “enriched” with the addition of information obtained through extraction of text (OCR), automatic generation of semantic metadata (eg, MODS to DC), identification of the language of a text, etc..
The system has been designed and realized by adopting national and international models (OAIS) and standards (DC, MAG, METS, MODS, OAI-PMH) and has as its primary objectives to ensure maximum interaction with similar systems on the basis of national and international projects (eg. Europeana) and to support heterogeneous typologies of digital resources and metadata.
The technological solution has been designed favoring the use of open source software and its technological architecture is based on interaction, integration and modularity.
From an infrastructure point of view the system is based on the integration of several components:
- Digital Library Repository;
- Middleware Application for ingestion procedures;
- System of OCR conversion;
- Full-text search engine (on metadata and OCR);
- Digital Library portal for the delivery of content from the digital / digitized asset;
- Supporting applications for image server, format converters, viewers, etc
OPENBiI / DLMS is characterized by a large set of webservices (API), both SOAP and REST, for management, access and research of the objects and data streams in the repository server. It is therefore, for these reasons, extremely flexible and enhancing an easy interaction with the digital library, built with this architecture, with other applications (eg. mobile App, other client systems). Again with a view of interaction, the system offers the possibility of '"harvesting" its data, through queries OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Meta data Harvesting).

The web portal is one of the main tools of OPENBi IT system for exploration, navigation and access to an unknown sea of documents, books and treasures of the cultural history, remained hitherto inaccessible. A virtual door that opens up an unknown world, but so far not exploited ,nor organized ,in order to be protected and used in an optimal way; a dynamic window which, thanks to the web, also opens to a much wider audience than the academic-specialist one.
OPENBi APP (mobile) (Macnill s.r.l.)
This multilingual (application Italian, English) enhances a direct access through your smartphone, to the project "OPENBi" by means of a form of authentication. The APP allows the user to have a real "library in the pocket" always at hand and to choose a text, always and everywhere, guiding the user to the nearest library that will provide the chosen work.
Its graphics is designed to allow a quick view of the list of works, available for consultation (eg. clickable elements positionable on the map, and so on. ).
Using OPENBi Mobile App, user will have also the opportunity to search the text by library and view them on a map , download on the smartphone, where possible, the pages of a text in the different available formats (pdf, ocr, jpeg), in order to enhance their sharing
Other important functions are: integration with the main social networks, in order to involve the community of users interested in the cultural contents; the count of the visualizations of a given text by one or all users.
OPENBi Demolab (Multimedia totem) (Altanet s.r.l.)
The multimedia totem is an innovative way of communication to be placed inside historic buildings and places of cultural interest, where the contents of OPENBi will be shown to the target audiences. The multimedia totem will be set up in the spaces of the Ex Conservatorio S. Anna, in via Libertini, 1 Lecce, seat of the Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency.
The totem will allow users via touchscreen interaction, to have the opportunity of consulting the acquired cultural patrimony of books and documents.
The descriptive content, the videos in full HD will appear, in fact, on an intuitive graphical interface allowing a wide range of clients to enjoy a rapid and personalized consultation of the scientific treasures came to light thanks to the research work of the experts and at the same time, it will allow us to continue the process of experimentation and testing of the tool of the system OPENBi.
THE PROGRAMME - "Apulian ICT Living Labs"
OPENBi is a project funded by "Apulian ICT Living Labs", aproject set up by Apulia Region to test a new approach to research activities. The networking of researchers, companies and groups of citizens can exchange ideas and knowledge and can co- design new products and test innovative technological solutions.
The aim is to develop and enhance new products and services for the SMEs and families within the entire region. Living Labs across Europe are more than 300, they stimulate innovation, provides opportunity for economic, social and cultural development, move research from laboratories to real life, where citizens become "co-developers".
The Apulia region has set up several financial tools for more than € 24.000.000,00, available to Apulian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) working in this sector. These tools are set out in the 2007-2013 ERDF Operational Programme, Convergence objective" Investing in your future", Axis 1, Measure 1.4, Action 1.4.2" Supporting the growth and development of SMEs specializing in offering digital content and services". In accordance with Action 1.4.2, the granted projects provide for the set-up of a partnership made up of at least three local subjects or subjects with headquarters in the Apulia Region; one for each of the three categories: SMEs active in ICT sector, Research Laboratories, Associations and Bodies. The duration of Living Labs projects is 12 months.
